Marthe Elsbeth of Oak HillMarthe Elsbeth was born in Flanders in 1474. She was orphaned early and grew up on the streets. She was taken in by a kindly printer, who taught her the basics of setting type and creating documents using Gutenberg's new invention. Because she matured late, she was able to hide the fact of her sex. She was chosen to accompany her master to England, when he journeyed there to set up a print shop for a wealthy eccentric in the village of Oak Hill. When she went through puberty, Marthe Elsbeth was taken in by the lady of the house (who had no children of her own) and her education in the womanly arts of weaving, embroidery, and household administration began. When Lady Oak Hill died several years later, Marthe Elsbeth took over the running of the household for Lord Oak Hill. When he too died, she inherited the estate.

Within the SCA, Mistress Marthe Elsbeth of Oak Hill is the founder and present head of House Oak Hill. Her awards include: Order of the Pelican (peerage for service), Grant of Arms, Order of the Bough of Meridies (for service to the Kingdom), Order of the Scarlet Star (for excellence in autocrating), Grant of Arms, Order of the Meridian Cross (kingdom arts award), Order of the Argent Lily (Kingdom award for courtesy), Order of the Meridian Majesty (for service to the Crown Consort), Order of the Sable Gryphon (for service to the Barony of Thor's Mountain), Daughter of Aduin (Baronial award for chivalry for ladies), Order of the Argent Plume (for service to the Baronial newsletter), and the Order of the Ram's Horn (Baronial service and arts awards).

In the SCA, Marthe Elsbeth has served as local Minister of Arts & Sciences, local Reeve, local Provost, Kingdom Parchment Pursuivant, and is presently heading the scroll creation within the Barony. She has autocratted many events, and has done almost every job necessary in running an event. Her artistic interests include weaving, dyeing of fiber, costuming, embroidery, soap and candle making, and herb craft.
